Plot:
“Lingochcha” transports us to the vibrant streets of Old Town Hyderabad, where Shiva (Karthik Ratnam) hails from a traditional Nayi Brahmin family. His reputation as a maestro in hairstyling is well-known, but his heart belongs to Noor Jahan (Supyardee Singh). Their young love blossoms while playing the age-old game of Lingoccha (seven Stones). As the years pass, Shiva’s affection for Noor Jahan remains unwavering. However, fate takes a twist as Noor Jahan is compelled to relocate to Dubai by her conservative father. She eventually returns to India, and their love endures despite her impending arranged marriage. Noor and Shiva make life-altering choices, and the consequences are shocking. The unfolding events form the crux of the story.
Performances:
Karthik Ratnam, drawing from his background as a theater artist, delivers a convincing and sincere performance. He immerses himself in his character, with a particularly remarkable display in the emotionally charged climax. Supyardee Singh, who portrays Noor Jahan, captivates the audience with her endearing demeanor and authentic portrayal of a Muslim girl. Her body language and expressions are spot-on, creating delightful chemistry with Karthik Ratnam. Thagubothu Ramesh and Uttej play notable supporting roles.

The music by Because Raj is notable for its rooted tunes and background score that seamlessly aligns with the film’s backdrop. The editing is sharp and precise, while the cinematographer beautifully captures the aesthetics of the Old City locations. Director Anand Bada’s authentic Hyderabadi backdrop is commendable, offering a refreshing take on the conventional love story. While the plot might follow a familiar trajectory, the presentation sets it apart. The on-screen chemistry between the lead pair is a significant asset. The second half does suffer from pacing issues at times, but the transformation of the protagonist and the emotionally charged climax more than compensate for it. On the downside, the comedy doesn’t always hit the mark. “Lingochcha” stands as a genuine Hyderabadi film, capturing the local spirit and flavor in a natural and relatable manner, which is its greatest strength. On the whole, the film is impressive.
