Making Music for “Thangalaan” Was Very Enriching – Music Director GV Prakash Kumar

“Thangalaan” is a period action film starring Chiyaan Vikram as the lead. The movie is produced by director Pa Ranjith and prominent producer KE Gnanavelraja under the Studio Green Films banner, in association with Neelam Productions. Parvathy Thiruvothu and Malavika Mohanan play the female leads in the film, which is set against the backdrop of the Kolar Gold Fields. Scheduled for a grand worldwide theatrical release on the 15th of this month, coinciding with Independence Day, the film has generated significant anticipation. In this context, talented music director GV Prakash Kumar shared his experience working on the film in a recent interview.

– I felt very excited when I received the offer to work on “Thangalaan.” The film is on a grand scale, akin to Indiana Jones. Upon hearing the script, I understood the kind of music that would complement the story. Set in pre-independence times with a tribal backdrop, I was curious about the music created by tribal communities. I studied the music of Australian and African tribes to inform my approach. Instead of using modern music, we crafted an original score that fits the story’s context. My team was incredibly supportive throughout the process.

– “Thangalaan” is a massive project. I spent 50 days re-recording the music for the film, and at times, I had to tune in advance by two or three days. The primary challenge was the limited time frame, but we managed to produce an excellent result. Director Pa Ranjith shared his vision with me, and I tailored the music to align with his vision. Working on “Thangalaan” as a music director was immensely satisfying.

– The title song “Thangalaan” and the track “Manaki Manaki” have received a positive response, with many views on digital platforms. Beyond the songs, the background music (BGM) is also very impactful. The story encompasses a range of emotions—love, conspiracy, conflict, and anger. I created the BGM to enhance these emotions and connect more effectively with the audience.

– Director Pa Ranjith has crafted a remarkable film with a magical realism screenplay. Although there have been period films with magical realism in the past, this one has additional layers. Working with Pa Ranjith was a fantastic experience.

– Vikram’s transformation for this film is impressive. The movie demands significant physical effort from the actors, and Vikram’s dedication was evident. The female characters, portrayed by Parvathy Thiruvothu and Malavika Mohanan, are particularly strong and their performances are outstanding.

– “Thangalaan” will present audiences with a new world, and I am eagerly looking forward to watching it on the big screen with you all. I am confident that viewers will experience the thrill of “Thangalan.”

– Although new technologies, including AI, are becoming available, it’s important not to rely solely on technology. There should be a balance in how much we use it.

– I am also working on several exciting projects, including “Lucky Baskhar” starring Dulquer in Telugu and “Robin Hood” starring Nithiin. Additionally, I have projects with Dil Raju under Vyjayanthi banners and a Tamil film directed by Dhanush. I am also involved in films with Sivakarthikeyan’s Amaran. As both an actor and music director, I have carefully planned my priorities to avoid causing any disruptions.
